Instructional Focus
Our instructional focus is to ensure that all students have the literacy skills necessary for the 21st century learner.
Literacy for the 21st century learner encompases a broad set of skills and competencies, integrated across the Kindergarten to Grade 12 programs of study. Each student must develop competency in reading, writing, speaking, viewing, listening, representing, and numeracy as foundational skills for 21st century learning.
Literacy learning involves effective use of:
- personal and social skills such as collaboration, communication, leadership and self direction.
- digital age literacy that includes cultural competence, global awareness, accessing information from a variety of texts and effective use of technology and tools.
- learning and thinking skills such as inquiry based learning, critical and creative thinking, problem solving, number sense, higher order thinking, meta-cognition and intellectual engagement.

Julia Kiniski School is a part of the District-wide focus on Reading. At JK, we read!
At Julia Kiniski School, we believe in the importance of teaching the whole child. A strong focus on improvement in reading, writing and mathematics skills provides the foundation of our teaching. We believe in developing healthy, active children through daily physical fitness and school-wide fitness activities. All children in grades K-6 receive quality music instruction, and children in Grades 4-6 may participate in choir. Our school also places focus on citizenship and leadership skills. As children learn about the world around them, they grow in their understanding, care and concern for their natural world and the people in it. Together we learn; together we grow!
