Our School is named for Julia Kiniski.  Julia Kiniski  emigrated from Poland in 1912  and moved with her family to Chipman, Alberta.  She was known and loved as a supporter of the community.  Julia  served 7 years on the Edmonton City Council from 1963 to 1969. 

Julia Kiniski School serves a diverse population of students from southeast Edmonton, including the neighbourhoods of Burnewood, Burnewood Junction, Kiniski Gardens, Creek's Crossing, and Maple Crest.

We are organized into 19 classes, Kindergarten through Grade Six. 

We benefit from the involvement of an active School Council and two fundraising organizations, the JK Fundraising Association and the Julia Kiniski Education Society, to enhance student learning through access to increased educational resources.

Julia Kiniski School provides a supervised lunch program to help families who cannot make other arrangements for their children during the lunch hour.  A lunch fee is mandatory for any students grade 1-6 who stay for lunch.  Families are still responsible for providing lunch and snacks for their children.  

Lunch Room Application Forms can be located on Schoolzone or at the school office. 

Lunchtime Schedule:

Each class will eat in their classroom with a lunchroom supervisor who will also supervise the outside recess. 

Grades 1 - 3 eat in their classroom from 11:30 am until 11:55 am and have outdoor recess from 11:55 until 12:15 pm.

Grades 4-6 begin outdoor recess at 11:30 am. They return to their classroom to eat lunch at 11:55 pm

Students staying for lunch are expected to behave in a respectful, responsible manner. All students are expected to behave appropriately and eat lunch respectfully at their own desks. 

• Students are not to share food (due to possible allergies). 
• Students need to bring their own utensils for eating, we do not provide utensils.
• No glass containers are to be brought to school because of the safety factor. 
• Students will need to bring a cold lunch or use thermoses for hot items. There are no microwaves available for student use.
• Students are to remain on school grounds unless they have been signed out by a parent or guardian at the office. 

Students who are not respectful and safe at lunchtime maybe asked to eat their lunch with another class or may be temporarily or permanently suspended from the lunch program.

We are excited to be offering hot lunches through Healthy Hunger every Thursday.

A reminder to families that:

• The deadline for ordering lunch for your child will be the Saturday before at noon.   As this is an online submission we can not add additional requests after this day/time.  
• Please pay close attention when finalizing orders, on occasion the submit button is missed and orders are not completed.
•  For those students that are absent on delivery day,  the  school will hold lunches until Friday at 12:30 pm .

Children who live within school boundaries are encouraged to walk to and from school. Parents may also choose to drive students, though parking near the school can be congested during peak hours. 

Children coming from Maple neighbourhood and students who live further than 1.6km from school may be eligible for busing to Julia Kiniski School. Busing is provided in the Maple neighbourhood, which does not have a school in their area, and Julia Kiniski is the designated school. Information about applying for busing can be found here.

Parking and Student Drop-Off

We understand that the parking situation around Julia Kiniski can be challenging for families with limited space.  It is a very busy street/intersection in front of the school and our priority is always the safety of our students. 

There is parking along 44 street as well as 41 street.  

The large orange pylons along 41 avenue (in front of the school) are reserved for our school bus

• If there is no yellow school bus, you may pull up and drop off and go.
• Please be mindful of the crosswalk and student visibility. 
• Drivers are required to slow to 30 km/h in all playground zones from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.  
• Please  be mindful of our neighbors, not blocking driveways or parking on lawns.  
• We ask that families do not  stop and let students out in the middle of the road or in the crosswalk
• When parking in the cul-de -de-sac you must be cautious with the families and individual students that are crossing sidewalk to sidewalk.

The Julia Kiniski  parking lot is reserved for school staff only.  We ask that families do not use this lot for the safety of our students and staff.  We also ask that families not use the bus lane/round about.  This lane does need to be kept clear for our yellow school buses

The Safety of ALL children at our school is a shared responsibility.

Julia Kiniski Education Society

For many years, Julia Kiniski School has been fortunate to work in partnership with the Julia Kiniski Education Society (JKES). Through the work of its executive and countless school and community volunteers over the years, the Julia Kiniski Education Society has provided numerous high-quality resources and experiences to enhance the learning for our students.

 These have included:

• New technologies
• Library resources 
• Books for home reading
• Fine arts program
• Physical fitness equipment
• Musical instruments. 

Julia Kiniski Education Society works together with our  School Council. School Council provides an opportunity for parents to help discuss educational topics or areas of concern, provide feedback, and be involved in decision making processes. All parents of Julia Kiniski School are considered to be members of the School Council and are welcome to attend any of the meetings.
